Phonological Awareness

Phonological Awareness Micro-credential Stack

Phonological awareness is the understanding that speech is made up of individual speech elements (words, syllables, phonemes) and the ability to recognize and manipulate these elements. It is a foundational reading skill. The National Reading Panel identified phonemic awareness, the most sophisticated subset of phonological awareness, as one of the five pillars of successful reading instruction.

In the Phonological Awareness stack, you will have the opportunity to develop and demonstrate these four competencies:

  • Foundations of Phonological Awareness (5 Credit Hours):
To earn this micro-credential, you will demonstrate an understanding of the core components of phonological awareness, including clarifying the distinction between phonological and phonemic awareness, their impact on reading development, and strategies for working with students who have demonstrated challenges in this area.
  • Identify Student Needs in Phonological Awareness (5 Credit Hours):
To earn this micro-credential, you will leverage data to identify a student’s or small group of students’ strengths and challenges in phonological awareness.
  • Design a Plan for Phonological Awareness Instruction (5 Credit Hours):
To earn this micro-credential, you will demonstrate the ability to design a plan to support a student’s or small group of students’ acquisition of phonological awareness skills.
  • Implement a Plan for Phonological Awareness Instruction (5 Credit Hours):
To earn this micro-credential, you will implement a data-driven plan to support phonological awareness instruction in the classroom for an individual or small group of students.
