Lower School

Grades K - 5

In the Lower School at The Hill Center our students have the chance to experience academic success – many for the first time.  Lower School students are taught Hill Methodology in the purest form through individualized instruction in classrooms with a maximum 4:1 student/teacher ratio.  The small class size and personalized attention allow for a nurturing environment where students have the chance to form a lasting understanding and appreciation for their learning differences.  Students benefit from hands-on classroom manipulatives, continuously integrated technology and collaborative teaching techniques.  To keep students engaged, programs like Book It Reading Incentive Program make reading fun while real-world math simulations based on current events, such as the Olympics, make math more tangible and exciting.  If you were to ask a current Hill Center Lower School student what they enjoy most about Hill, their list may include: celebrating birthdays at class meetings, having a “Hill Hero” represent the Lower School at school events, visiting the Durham Academy book fair, participating in “Creative Group” with Hill’s school counselor, dressing up for Spirit Week, being a part of the all-school talent show and delighting in Springfest.
