Literacy is an achievement that rests on language competence at all levels, from the elemental sounds to the most overarching structures of text.
The informed reading teacher understands the contributions and instructional implications of the language systems, connections to literacy skills/abilities as well as the complexity of skilled reading. This session will identify contributors to skilled reading, define language systems (e.g. phonology, morphology, semantics, syntax) and establish their connections to instructional components. It will also provide participants with examples of effective instructional practices for building this connection and strengthening reading achievement.
