In this hands-on, interactive workshop, Van Cleave begins by examining components of effective vocabulary instruction. He helps participants discern what works—and what doesn’t work—when it comes to developing students’ vocabulary. In addition to general best practices, he spends considerable time helping participants explore morphology (the use of bases and affixes) to build vocabulary. Participants examine key ingredients of an effective lesson, and develop a problem-solving instructional technique to help students develop their critical thinking skills and engage in the learning process. At all levels, participants have the opportunity to practice with genuine word exploration. They leave this workshop with strategies they can use the very next day in their classrooms!
