Phonics - Breaking the Code

In this interactive workshop, attendees will engage in activities that will enable them to break the challenging alphabetic code for students.  Participants will explore:

  • The basics of teaching phonics in a structured, sequential manner, using key words and phonetic patterns
  • Phonological awareness as a key component to reading success
  • Word segmentation using the six syllable types with both real words and nonsense words
Study Skills for Student Success

Students with strong study skills are more likely to be successful in school.  This workshop focuses on incorporating study skills into the daily classroom program.  Participants will learn:

  • Strategies that will allow students to be more efficient and effective learners
  • Tips for organization, time management, and homework
  • Ways to provide instruction in note taking, test taking, and test creation

Understanding Learning Differences:  An Introduction to Learning Disabilities and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorders

While examining the background, definitions, red flags, and characteristics of LD and ADHD, participants will:

  • Experience simulations of how it feels to have a learning difference
  • Learn about standardized diagnostic instruments and how to interpret results for planning individualized instruction
  • Use information from a case study to recognize patterns associated with possible learning difficulties
  • Learn to recognize the social/emotional aspects of learning disabilities and attention deficit disorders

Effective Classroom Instruction through Differentiated Practices

The diversity of individual student characteristics and learning profiles can pose challenges to teachers who are charged with delivering a high quality curriculum to all students.  This course will provide teachers with:

  • Effective instructional strategies that address the learning environment, flexible grouping, high quality curriculum, and continuous assessment
  • Knowledge about how to incorporate student interests, learning styles, and readiness levels into lesson and unit plans, resulting in meaningful instruction that addresses content standards
  • An overview of accommodations, modifications, and assistive technology to enhance their understanding of differentiated practices
