As a result of the extraordinary success of the academic program and the school’s mission to be a comprehensive resource center for both public and private schools in North Carolina and beyond, The Hill Center has developed an extensive outreach program. The Hill Center has undergone a rigorous accreditation process with the International Multisensory Structured Language Educational Council (IMSLEC) to have all of its professional development courses meet high standards set forth by this organization. IMSLEC accreditation allows The Hill Center to offer certification in its internationally recognized Hill Methodology. The Hill PREP (Professional Education Program) is its vehicle for certification.
The curriculum for Hill PREP workshops, geared toward special educators and reading specialists, is based on a multisensory, structured language approach to teaching reading, written language, and math. Aspects of the Orton-Gillingham approach and precision teaching methods, which use direct instruction and daily measurement of student progress, along with individual analysis of student skill acquisition, make up what is known as the Hill Methodology. The Hill Methodology has been validated through research studies conducted by UNC-Chapel Hill, Duke University, and Wake Forest University, SERVE, Inc, and RTI International. These studies indicate that, for every year of instruction, a student makes on average one to two years gain in helping to close the achievement gap.
The Hill Center has four levels of certification in multisensory structured language for educators to pursue. The four levels of certification are:
- The Teaching Level
- The Instructor of Teaching Level
- The Therapy Level
- The Instructor of Therapy Level
