Mission
We transform students with learning differences into confident, independent
learners. Overview
- 4:1 student/teacher ratio that allows close
student-teacher interaction in a nurturing environment while removing
the stigma often associated with learning differences.
- Research-based multisensory structured language
methodology, focused on reading, written language and math. Based
on the Orton-Gillingham approach
- Over 80% of faculty and staff hold master’s
degrees.
- Successfully partnered with more than 72 public
and independent schools throughout the Triangle community (70% public
and 30% independent).
- Average student gains full benefits of Hill within
3 years and typically transitions back to their school full-time.
- Over 90% of The Hill Center’s high school
graduates go on to college, compared to the national rate of 68%.
- National Council for Exceptional Children, award
for “Exemplary LD Program” .
- School of Excellence Award from National Association of Special Education Teachers Organization
- Academic programs are certified by the NC Department
of Public Instruction and the Southern Association of Colleges and
Schools.
- Studies in association with Duke, UNC-CH, and Wake
Forest University documenting one- to two-year academic gains, helping
students to match or exceed grade level expectations for each year
enrolled in the program.
- Partnership projects with RTI International
to demonstrate program effectiveness.
- Founded in 1977, one of the Southeast’s oldest
and largest K – 12 schools for high potential students with
learning disabilities and/or attention deficit disorder.
Student Programs
- 165 students enrolled in 2008-2009 academic school year.
- Summer—five-week intensive program, mirroring half-day academic program, for 64 students in grades K-8.
- The Hill Tutoring Connection—serving 500+ Triangle area students in a variety of subject areas.
- Student Enrichment Programs— Topics range from SAT Review, to Keyboarding, to Study Skills.
Professional Development
- More than 7,500 educators from over
74 North Carolina counties, 17 states and four countries have attended
workshops.
- Workshops include one to three – day programs and are offered throughout the year.
- Comprehensive copyrighted Hill Center program and materials developed for easy organization and are user friendly.
- Custom-designed workshops and consultative services are available for schools.
- Replication materials of The Hill Center Model are available and include consulting, as well as information manuals.
- Four levels of teacher certification in an
internationally accredited program for multisensory instruction are
offered through Hill PREP (Professional Education Program).
- One of four professional development programs recognized by
the NC Department of Public Instruction for improving reading.
Outreach Programs
- Replication projects underway in Greenville, North Carolina;
Colorado Springs, Colorado, Geneva, Switzerland and San Salvador, El Salvador.
- Consultation
with educators and school systems worldwide.
- Hill-based
programs are being implemented in early childhood programs
and public and private school settings around North Carolina.
